GOOD WI-FI MAKES HAPPY INTERNET USERS

The latest Morning Consult survey shows that 84 percent of respondents use Wi-Fi when connecting to the internet at home.

It seems sort of obvious. How else would the dozens of web devices we’ve all come to rely on connect to the internet? Everything from tablets to smart dog dishes rely on Wi-Fi to stay online. But what’s remarkable isn’t so much the number of people who routinely use Wi-Fi, but how quickly it has become an almost ubiquitous connection tool and how satisfied people are with their overall Wi-Fi experience.

It was developed in the early 1990s, but Wi-Fi was first used in a way we’d be familiar with in 1999. Less than two decades later and experts are predicting that by 2020 the world will have 50 billion Wi-Fi enabled devices. Things we can’t even imagine today will be voraciously feeding off of the wireless broadband in our homes, cafes, and even in our public parks. This is remarkable, especially when compared to telephone technology which took nearly 70 years just to hit fifty percent market saturation.

And beyond being everywhere, Wi-Fi works really well. The same Morning Consult survey showed that 88 percent of respondents are satisfied with the home Wi-Fi experience provided by their ISP. For a technology that operates on a bandwidth that was once considered junk spectrum and was basically unheard of 15 years ago, that’s remarkable.
